“Language is a process of free creation; its laws and principles are fixed, but the manner in which the principles of generation are used is free and infinitely varied.
“Even the interpretation and use of words involves a process of free creation.”
– Noam Chomsky
Speech-Language Pathologists work almost exclusively with clients troubled by the most innate and natural human ability: speech and language. It’s something we begin to acquire at birth, with little to no conscious thought. And yet, when you see those who struggle with it, it becomes so complex. How our brains organize all that meaning is an enigma.
In many ways, it’s hard to think that every individual I will work with in my career will struggle with the one thing that makes us most human.
But that’s why I chose this profession; That’s why I’m excited for graduation.
Language is the most powerful gift I could give someone. It’s the ability to describe inexpressible thoughts, to name to an emotion, to understand humor, to build social bonds, to live.
So whether it’s due to hearing loss, an acute brain injury, a developmental delay, a voice disorder, or what have you …
I’m thankful for being equipped over these past two years to share the most important human ability.
I hope to not soon take it for granted.
